On 19 Jan 1945 Malcolm enlisted in the RAAF at No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre in Perth, mustered as a Trainee TG V. He was sent to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF's Reception unit the same day and remained there until 26 Jan 1945 when he was posted to No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF to undergo Recruit Drill Course No B296.
