Electoral Roll entry: 1910 labourer at "Survey Camp" in Nelson State Electorate.

War Service

Was sent to the Broadmeadows camp in Victoria for training as an artilleryman, and there he was allocated to the 3rd Division Ammunition Column, 2nd Section on 29 May 1916. Three days later on 1 Jun 1916 he was appointed a Driver.

On arrival in England the unit spent another 3 months in training in the Larkhill district before moving to France on 24 Nov 1916.

On 23 Feb 1918 Lewis proceeded to the UK for leave, rejoining his unit on 12 Mar 1918. Almost a year later (16 - 30 Jan 1919) he was again granted leave in the UK. On his return from the second leave, he was detached to the Base Remount Unit at Le Havre from 19 - 23 Mar 1919, and almost immediately he returned to England.
