Joseph enlisted in the RAAF at the No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre on 22 Dec 1944, mustered as a Cook's Assistant TG V. On 29 Dec 1944 he was transferred to No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF to undertake a Recruit Drill course. On 3 Feb 1944 he was posted to RAAF Base Pearce and he remained with them ntil he was transferred on 16 Jun 1945 to No. 1 School of Technical Training RAAF in Melbourne.
