Pre War
War Service
On enlistment Bernard or Jim as he was known was classified B2 (no thumb on right hand, and deafness). He was called up for full time duty on 1 Jul 1941 with the 118th Australian General Hospital.
19 Mar 1941 Jim transferred from 118th Australian General Hospital
On 5 Aug 1942 Jim rejoined his unit and was posted to the Arthur Battery and on 4 Sep 1942 he was promoted to Acting Corporal. This rank was confirmed on 1 Jan 1943. Jim was admitted to the 37th Australian Camp Hospital, returning to his unit on 19 May 1943. On 18 Nov 1943 Jim was again ill and admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital, rejoining his unit on 6 Dec 1943. He was admitted to the 37th Australian Camp Hospital with Boils on 25 May 1944, and at this time he faced a Medical Board which deemed him B2 on deafness grounds. On 16 Nov 1944 he was transferred to the 75th Australian Camp Hospital. On 18 Feb 1946 Jim was tranferred to the 110th Australian Base Hospital, remaining withthem until 6 Mar 1947 when he was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge which took place on 26 May 1947.

At death his age is given as 60, implying that he was born in 1899, not 1902 as his Army records show.
