Pre War
War Service
Roy enlisted part time in the CMF on 17 Feb 1942, and was called up for full time service on 16 Mar 1942 with the 29th Australian Garrison Battalion at Fremantle. On 1 May 1942 he transferred to the 5th Australian Garrison Battalion at Swanbourne, and on 27 Aug 1942 he was appointed Lance Corporal. Roy was transferred to the Artillery Reinforcement Depot from 25 March until 10 April 1943, and was then transferred to the 12th Australian Artillery Training Battery. On 16 Jul 1943 Roy was transferred to the 29th Australian Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery, and there he enlisted in the 2nd AIF with new Army Number WX40278. He reverted at his own request to Gunner on 27 Sep 1943, before transferring to the 116th Australian Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment.
On 14 Feb 1944 Roy was admitted to the 118th Australian General Hospital at Northam with a lacerated left hip and haematoma to the left thigh from an accident while on duty. He was deemed to not have been negligent, and he returned to his unit on 25 Feb 1944. He was awarded Proficiency Pay from 1 Jul 1943, but as a result of an offence, lost it on 10 Jul 1944 as he had been charged with being AWOL from 10:15pm on 7 Jul 1944 until 12:45am on 8 Jul 1944. Found guilty, he was awarded 14 days Confined to Barracks and would also have forfeited a day's pay. Roy was granted Proficiency Pay again on 10 Jan 1945. On 23 Mar 1945 Roy transferred to 1st Australian Base Depot Personnel in Liverpool NSW, and on 23 May 1945 he was transferred to 3rd Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot at Wallangarra in Queensland. Another move saw him posted to the 13th Australian Advance Ordnance Depot at Charters Towers on 19 Jun 1945 where on 6 Dec 1945 he was promoted Corporal.
Roy was transferred to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot on 10 Jul 1946, where he was discharged on 2 Aug 1946
Post War
During 1947 Roy married Margaret Mary Morrow (1926 - 7 Aug 2013).
