Pre War
At the time of his original enlistment Joe was living at 285 Port Road, Hindmarsh, South Australia and he was working for Holden.
War Service
Joseph's original enlistment was on a part time basis with the CMF on 7 May 1941, and he was called up for full time duty on 14 Nov 1941. Joe had been allocated to the 43rd Australian Infantry Battalion (Hindmarsh Regiment). With his unit, Joe moved to the Northern Territory, leaving Adelaide on 18 Dec 1941 and arriving in Darwin on Christmas Day 1941.
On 5 Jun 1942 Joe was appointed a Specialist TGII (Signaller), but on 15 Jun 1942 he was admitted to the 111th Australian Convalescent Depot, suffering with exhaustion, remaining with them until 12 Oct 1942. Joe enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 12 Nov 1942 at Adelaide River in the Northern Territory. On 31 Dec 1942 Joe had completed, but failed the No 3 Signals School. He was entrained for Adelaide on 28 Mar 1943 with the rest of his unit, arriving there on 7 Apr 1943.
Soon after, on 29 May 1943 they moved again, this time to Woodford in Queensland, where from 3 - 6 Jun 1943 Joe was admitted to the 102nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station to have a wart removed from his hand. Barely had he rejoined his unit and he was again admitted to the 102nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station on 21 Jul 1943 with a compound fracture of his left Tibia and Fibia, the result of an motor cycle accident. The Court of Inquiry held on 28 Jul 1943 established that Joe had riden a motorcycle which had collided with a Ford V8 Utility belonging to the 116th Australian Brigade Ordnance Field Park at approx 5:45pm on 21 Jul 1943. Joe was found to have been on duty acting as a Special Despatch Rider, but that he did not have an Army License. However, he did have a special despatch docket and was in training at the time of the accident.
On 5 Aug 1943 Joe was admitted to the 2/4th Australian General Hospital, and they passed him on to the 113th Australian General Hospital on 17 Aug 1943. From there he was passed on to the 108th Australian General Hospital (from 25 Aug till 8 Sep 1943) after which he was transferred on 9 Sep 1943 to the 105th Australian Military Hospital and then on 11 Oct 1943 to the 110th Perth Military Hospital at Hollywood where he arrived on 14 Oct 1943. On 16 Aug 1944 Joe was released to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot to be reassigned and on 26 Aug 1944 he married Murial Doreen. From 13 - 15 Nov 1944 he was treated by the 75th Australian Camp Hospital for Colic. On 15 Dec 1944 Joe was Medically assessed as B2 with a residual problem with his broken, left leg - restricted marching. On 2 Jan 1945 Joe was admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital with Tonsilitis, before being released on 11 January. Promoted Corporal on 31 Aug 1945, Joe was admitted to the 110th Perth Military Hospital with Bronchitis. Recovered he returned to the Details Depot on 15 Sep 1945. Joe had further stints in the 110th Perth Military Hospital: from 7 - 11 Jan 1946 in relation to his broken leg; from 2 - 13 Sep 1`946 for treatment of a herniated disc; and another period to treat his leg from 11 - 15 Nov 1946.
Finally on 11 Dec 1946 Joe was transferred to teh Discharge Section and his discharge took place on 9 Jan 1947
