Pre War
Prior to emigrating to Australia, John had served 4 years with the 4th Manchester Volunteers. Electoral Roll entries - 1914 at 138 Vincent street, Leederville, carpenter with Mary Alice.
War Service
10 days after entering camp, on 12 Nov 1915 John was allocated to Engineering reinforcements, and at some point was sent to Sydney to complete his pre-embarkation training. Transferred to the 13th Field Company from the 2nd reinforcements for the 6th Field Company on 6 Mar 1916 while at Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt.
While at Serapeum on 26 May 1916, he was charged with "Conduct prejudicial to good order and military discipline, to wit: aggravating a disturbance after lights out. For this he forfeited 7 days pay.
He boarded the SS Oriana in Alexandria on 6 Jun 1916 for Marseilles, arriving there on 12 Jun 1916. On arrival in France he is admitted to 2nd Australian General Hospital with an infection of the ear (Otitis). On 17 Jun 1916 he was transferred to a convalescent depot at Rouen before being released to base depot on 7 Jul 1916.
On 28 Sep 1916 he was detached for duty to the 4th Australian Division HQ. Admitted to the 9th General Hospital in Rouen on 8 Mar 1917, he was evacuated to England aboard HMAT A69 Warilda then operating as a Hospital Ship, for further treatment. In England, on 12 Mar 1917, he was admitted to the Stratford-on-Avon War Hospital with nephritis.
Following assessment by a Medical Board at Hurdcott he was sent to No.2 Command Depot in Weymouth to prepare for his return to Australia.
In Australia, awaiting discharge 8th Australian General Hospital, Fremantle he was charged with 1) Breaking out of Hospital; 2) AWOL from 1:00pm to 5:50pm on 21 Aug 1917, and 3) being DRUNK, having been brought in by the Perth Ambulance. He was found guilty and fined 10/- ($1)
Discharged 5th Military District 10 Sep 1917, John received a pension of 15/-, and Mary Alice, his wife 7/6 fortnightly from 11 Sep 1917.
Post War
Electoral Roll entries - 1919 he returned to 138 Vincent street, Leederville, remaining there until his death in 1929. Mary continued living there until her death on 30 Mar 1937 aged 61
