War Service
George was at Adelaide River in the Northern Territory when he enlisted at the Adelaide River Recruit Reception Depot. The same day he was posted to the 9th Australian Army Troops Company as a Specialist TGII (Carpenter). On 7 Oct 1942 he was transferred from the NT Line of Command to the SA Line of Command, arriving in Adelaide on 16 October. From his records it appears that he spent some time with the 58th Anti-Aircraft Company at Sommerton before rejoining his unit on 14 Nov 1942. Ten days later he was granted 28 days Home leave (Queensland), but he extended his leave with a period AWOL From 8:00am 23 Dec 1942 until 2:00pm on 30 Dec 1942. For this he was fined £3 and lost eight days pay.
On 29 Sep 1944, he relinquished Trade Group 2 status as a carpenter, reducing to level 1. On 29 Sep 1944 George was admitted to the 2nd Australian Camp Hospital with burns to his face, before reurning to his unit on 6 Feb 1945. On 10 Feb 1945 George's detachment concluded and he returned to his unit. On 26 May 1945 George embarked in Brisbane on the USAT Maui, disembarking on Morotai on 5 Jun 1945. On the 24th George was again embarked, this time for Balikpapan.
With the war over, George was transferred on 29 Dec 1945 to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot where he was discharged on 29 Jan 1946.
