War Service

Three months after commencing his basic training, Edward was allocated to the 12th reinforcement draft for the 10th Light Horse, travelling with it to Egypt.

On 6 Mar 1916 Edward was transferred to the 3rd Light Horse Reserve Regiment, before transferring to the 1st Field Squadron of Engineers on 27 Jun 1916. On 28 Feb 1917, Edward was again transferred, this time to the 3rd Field Troop, Imperial Field Squadron, Royal Engineers at Deri-el-Belah.

Appointed acting Corporal on 25 Feb 1917, he was admitted to hospital on 9 May 1917 for three days, and he was sick again on 9 Aug 1917, being treated by the 3rd Australian Light Horse Filed Ambulance at Marakeb for 13 days with debility.

He was promoted Temporary Corporal on 24 Mar 1918. However, on 23 Jun 1918 he was again hospitalised. Seen initially by the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance, he was sent on to the 66th Casualty Clearance Station, and then the 36th Stationary Hospital in Gaza. A day later he was sent to the 44th Stationary Hospital in Kantara, and then on 1 Jul 1918 to the 31st General Hospital in Abbassia. On 24 Jul 1918 he was released to the Convalescent Depot before rejoining his unit. While in Cairo on 27 Aug 1918, Edward had been charged with AWOL "Whilst a convalescent, overstaying a pass from 7pm to 10:35 pm, for which he was Reprimanded.

Edward rejoined his unit on 27 Oct 1918, but on 2 Dec 1918 he was again in need of medical attention - this time for malaria, being admitted to the 21st General Hospital in Alexandria. This lead to his being invalided home early. On arrival in Albany he was admitted to hospital with a septic foot.
