Pre War

Prior to the end of the 1910 School Year John was a student of the Thomas St Primary School. In 1911 the school closed and students transfewrred for the 1911 school year to Perth Modern School. During 1912 John was employed as a Monitor at the Perth Modern School.

War Service

Entered the Claremont training camp of the 10th Light Horse Regiment on 21 Oct 1914 and he was allocated to 'C' Squadron. Following training in Australia, the 10th Light Horse Regiment was sent to Egypt, arriving on 8 March 1915.

The regiment's first action of the war came during the Gallipoli campaign. Due to terrain and the static nature of the fighting on the peninsula, it was felt that mounted units could not play a part, however, a number of Light Horse units were deployed in a dismounted role as infantry. The 10th Light Horse Regiment departed Alexandria on 16 May 1915 and arrived at Gallipoli on 20 May 1915, landing in the evening of 21 May 1915. Initially the Regiment was largely used in a defensive role.

The date John was wounded is not entered into his Army records but given the unit's War Diary tells us that he was wounded along with Lt H Williamson and one other when one of their own trench mortar bombs detonated through unauthorised interference and negligence on 1 Aug 1915. John died at 1:30am on 7 Aug 1915 after treatment in Alexandria. John had sustained serious wounds to his right and left arms, and both legs. His right arm, and both legs had been amputated. He had been admitted to the 15th General Hospital in Alexandria on 6 Aug 1915, and died the next day.

Died of wounds on 7 August that he received in action on August 1. Left last February with the 10th Light Horse, forth son of Mr. And Mrs. John Regan of Wongan Hills. Born at Jarrahdale. The deceased hero, who was in his 21st year, received his education at No 6 Jarrahdale School (where he won a five years scholarship), at the Perth Normal School, and finally at Claremont Training College, where he had a brilliant course. His brother Mr. P. J. Regan, resides at Yarloop, his sister, Mrs D. Jones, at Roseberry Avenue, South Perth. Another sister, Mrs. J. Burke, resides at Gosford NSW and another Miss Eileen Regan, completed her studies at the Presentation Convent (Collie). Father awarded a pension of £24 per annum from 8 Oct 1915.
