Pre War

War Service

Mervyn enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 15 Aug 1944 at Claremont and he was sent to the Recruit Training Centre locally before being transferred on 1 Dec 1944 to the 2nd Australian Infantry Training Brigade at Bathurst in New South Wales, arriving there on 10 Jan 1944. On 28 Dec 1944 he was posted to the 3rd Australian Motor Transport Training Depot at Bonegilla to undertake a course for Military drivers. On 11 Feb 1945 he was then enrolled in a Driver/Mechanics course which ran from 12 February until 17 Mar 1945. On its completion he was transferred to the 23rd Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 22 Mar 1945.


On 30 May 1945 Mervyn was posted to the 13/33rd Australian Infantry Battalion, where on 28 Jul 1945 Mervyn was charged with having been 'beyond the camp limits', and 'Conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline'. He was fined £3 and was awarded 14 days Confined to Barracks. On 14 Aug 1945 he was sent to the Cunungra based Australian Reinforcement Training Battalion (Jungle Warfare)'s 2nd Battalion to prepare for overseas service. He was transferred to the Cunungra based unit's HQ element on 5 Nov 1945 before needing treatment from the 22nd Australian Camp Hospital for influenza between 29 Nov 1945 and 10 Dec 1945. He was then transferred to the primary unit's 4th Battalion from 24 Nov 1945 until 15 Jan 1946 when he returned to the HQs element.


On 18 Mar 1946 Mervyn was posted to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot 'for disposal'. He was posted to Western Australia Area Workshop on 30 Apr 1946 and there was graded as a TG II Painter for pay purposes. On 20 Dec 1946 Mervyn was posted to the discharge Section of Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot who then discharged him on 24 Dec 1946.

Post War

Discharge address was Churchmans Brook, Armadale. Moved to Victoria in 1966. Living at 12 Burton grove, Swan Hill in June 1974
