Tom Enlisted in the 2nd AIF at Claremont on 12 Sep 1944 and a week later he was transferred to the Australian Recruit Training Company (Western Command). Tom was AWOL from midnight 26 Dec 1944 until noon on 28 Dec 1944 for which he was fined £2 and forfeited 2 days pay. On 31 Dec 1944 Tom was absent from a place of parade appointed by his Commanding Officer and AWOL from midnight 1 Jan 1945 until 8:30am on 2 Jan 1945, earning him 7 days Confined to Barracks and the forfeiture of a day's pay. He was again AWOL, this time from 6:00pm on 6 Jan 1945 until 6:40am on 8 Jan 1945, this time earning him a £2 fine, 5 days Confined to Barracks and forfeiture of 2 day's pay.
Tom was transferred to 1st RAE Training Centre on 10 Jan 1945, and on arrival was allocated to the 2nd RAE Training Battalion. On 15 Feb 1945 this changed to the 3rd RAE Training Battalion. On 14 Jun 1945, following training, Tom was posted to the 1st Australian Port Maintenace Company and on 28 Jul 1945 he married Lola Isobel of 20 Roberts street, Wallsent, Newcastle, NSW. On 10 Sep 1945 he was accidentally injured, and so on 19 Oct 1945 he was transferred to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot to prepare for discharge, arriving in WA on 5 Nov 1945, and his discharge being effective on 9 Nov 1945.
