Pre War

War Service

Fred enlisted in the CMF on 13 Feb 1942 at Goomalling and was called up for full time service on 14 Apr 1942. On 18 Apr 1942 Fred was posted to Western Command Bulk Issue Petrol and Oil Depot. on 1 June he entered 110th Australian Base Hospital, returning to his unit on 6 Jun 1942. On 11 Nov 1942 he enlisted in the 2nd AIF changing his identification number to WX34913. From 19 Nov until 22 Dec 1942 Fred was outposted to Mullewa, and he was granted proficiency pay, backdated to 1 Jul 1943.


Following a period in training in September as a Driver/Mechanic, on 9 Oct 1944 Fred was detached to HQ North West Sector. From 20 Oct - 26 Oct 1944, Fred was treated for Otitis Externus in the Derby State Hospital. On 23 Nov 1944 he was advised that his mother was in the Heathcote Mental Home in Applecross and he flew to Perth from Broome later that day. From 11 - 15 Dec 1944 Fred was treated by the 75th Australian Camp Hospital for diarrhoea. Following treatment he was posted to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for repposting. On 6 Jan 1945 he was posted to 1st Australian Base Depot for posting to the BIPOD in New South Wales, arr=ivig there on 12 January. On 26 Feb 1945 Fred was charged with 1) Failing to appear at a Place of Parade appointed by his Commanding Officer on 26 Feb 1945, and 2) a similar charge for later the same day. He was awarded two (2) extra guard duties.


On 19 Apr 1945 Fred was sent to the 2/1st Australian Convalescent Depot with Malaria, and on recovery he was posted to LHQ Medical Research Unit at Jungara in north Queensland. Fred was evacuated to 2/1st Australian Convalescent Depot on 29 Jun 1945, and he was sent on the same day to the 116th Australian General Hospital. On 15 Nov 1945 he was charged with Failing to appear at a Place of Parade appointed by his Commanding Officer, for which he was fined 10/- ($1). Fred was then transferred on 15 Nov 1945 to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for disposal.


On 22 Feb 1946 Fred was posted back to Queensland, where he entered training with the 3rd Battalian of the Australian Reinforcement Training Battalion (Jungle Warfare). Training completed he embarked aboard SS Canberra on 12 Mar 1946 in Brisbane for Rabaul on New Britain where he disembarked on 29 Mar 1946. His service on New Britian was with the 1st Australian Supply Depot Platoon until 21 Jun 1946 when he was again posted to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot, this time to take his discharge which took place on 11 Jul 1946. He was later, on 31 Oct 1946 awarded a Commander-in-Chief's Card for his involvement with Malaria research.


Post War

During 1946 Fred married Edith Rose Betts.
