Pre War

During 1924 Albert had married Bessie Maud Kerridge, and at time of his enlistment they had 4 children under the age of 16 years. The eldest being Stanley Charles (1921 - 2005). Two others were born post WW2.

War Service

On 29 Jul 1941 he was posted to the 3rd Training Battalion at Northam, and on 19 Aug 1941 this was changed to the 4th Training Battalion. Basic training completed, he was granted pre-embarkation leave from 16 - 22 Oct 1941. On 7 Nov 1941 he embarked on HMT Queen Mary as part of Convoy US 13, and on 24 Nov 1941 he disembarked in the Middle East, a member of the 24th Australian Infantry Training Battalion. The same day he was posted to the 2/1st Australian Movement & Transportation Group.


On 14 Feb 1942 he embarked in Egypt for Colombo (ship's name not known), and on 28 Mar 1942 he was transshipped to the SS Orcades for the voyage to Adelaide, disembarking there on 15 Mar 1942. On 1 Apr 1942 he was Graded A/Group III Clerk, with that status confirmed 3 months later on 1 Jul 1942 in Queensland. In the meantime he had been granted leave from 28 May to 22 Jun 1942.


On 8 Aug 1943 he again returned to WA on leave, before returning to his unit on 17 Sep 1943, in Queensland. On 2 Mar 1944 he left his unit for the Claremont Leave and Transit Depot where on 14 Mar 1944 he was approved for discharge on the basis of working in an Essential Service (bricks).

UTILITY OVERTURNS - FOUR MEN HURT

Four men were injured when a utility skidded and over-turned in loose gravel on Albany-rd, about 5½ miles east of the Narrogin Inn, early yesterday. Taken to hospita! were :

  • William Alfred Saunders (29), Canns-rd., Armadale, shoulder injury;
  • Alfred Gregory (33), 5th Road, Armadale, concussion and fractured ribs;
  • Angus George MacLean (23) and
  • Ian Stuart MacLean (22), Devonshire-Tce., Armadale, concussion and lacerations.
Saunders and Gregory were allowed to leave Royal Perth Hospital after treatment, but the MacLeans were detained. Utility was being driven towards Perth by Saunders when it failed to take an S-bend. Although the vehicle was extensively damaged, 3 of its passengers escaped injury. They were Casimir Bavish, Railwav-Ave, Armadale, Morris Jerard O'Brien, Prospect rd, Armadale, and Norman James, Prospect-rd, Armadale.
