Pre War

War Service

Joseph originally enlisted in the CMF on 4 Feb 1942, was called up for full time duty on the same date. Prior to this, Joseph had been a member of the 19th Australian Garrison Battalion and was posted to the 3rd Australian Corps Troops Supply Column on 24 Aug 1942 as a Trade Group II Cook. He then enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 12 Sep 1942. On 21 Dec 1942 Joseph was charged with having been AWOL from 9:00pm 16 Dec 1942 until 6:15am 21 Dec 1942. He was Admonished and automatically forfeited five days pay. On 15 Apr 1943 Joseph was transferred to the 37th Australian Company AASC, remaining with them until 4 Jan 1944 when Joseph was granted Leave Without Pay from 3:00pm on 4 Jan 1944 until 3:00pm on 1 Feb 1944.


On 16 Jun 1944 he was transferred to Sydney and he embarked on HMT Katoomba in Fremantle for Sydney where he disembarked on 26 Jun 1944. On 27 Jul 1944 he was posted to Australian Reinforcement Training Battalion (Jungle Warfare) at Canungra in southern Queensland. On 22 Aug 1944 he was transferred to the 2/1st Chemical Warfare Laboratory. On 18 Jul 1945 Joseph was seen by a Medical Board who downgraded his health status to 'B2 Skin', and this resulted in his being transferred back to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot on 30 Oct 1945, and his discharge on 5 Dec 1945.
