Pre War

18 year old Henry emigrated on the SS Orsova which departed London on 15 Jan 1915, travelling with his parents Robert and Elizabeth. During 1920 Henry married Winifred Constable in Perth.

War Service

On 12 Aug 1941 Henry enlisted with the part time 'Y' (Militia) Company of 5th Australian Garrison Battalion. On 15 Dec 1941 he was called up for full time duty and taken on strength by the 5th Garrison Battalion. On 19 Mar 1942 Henry was transferred to the 29th Australian Garrison Battalion and on 18 May 1942 he undertook a driving course after which on 13 Jun 1942 he was reclassified as a Driver.


On 28 Sep 1942 he was transferred to the Australian Staging Camp - Kalgoorlie before returning to the 29th Garrison Battalion at Guildford on 1 Sep 1943 . On 4 Jan 1944 Henry had been convicted - charged with a civil breach of Traffic Section 30 for which he was fined £3 ($6)wit 19/6 ($1.95) costs. Back at work Henry was declared to be proficient, receiving a pay bonus. On 5 Apr 1944 he was transferred tot eh 118th Australian General Hospital at Northam.


Still with 118th AGH, in New South Wales on 16 Apr 1945 Henry was found guilty of 'Conduct to the prejudice of Good order and Military Discipline. He was fined £5 ($10) and sentenced to 28 days detention (7 days remission was later granted), with the resulting loss of 28 days pay. Transferred to the 19th Australian Detention Barracks at Miranda, New South Wales, Henry was back with the hospital on 11 May 1945. On 7 Jun 1945 Henry was transferred to the 101st Australian General Hospital, and then on 16 Jul 1945 to 114th Australian General Hospital and on 20 Oct 1945 to Western Command Recruit & Reinforcement Reception Depot for discharge on 12 Dec 1945
