War Service

Clyde enlisted in the CMF on 6 Mar 1941 who posted him to the 13th Field Company on 24 Nov 1941. On 12 Jan 1942 he was called up for full time duty and he was transferred to the Heavy Artillery with a posting to Olivers Hill Battery on 26 Jan 1942. He was granted leave from 6 - 16 Feb 1942, before being discharged on 10 Mar 1942 on the grounds of providing Essential Services (University Student).

When he entered the Navy he had a Batchelor of Science (Engineering) so it might be assumed that he completed his degree after being discharged from the Army. He was mobilised into the RANVR (Navy Reserve) on 23 Aug 1944 at HHAS Leeuwin, and was sent to HMAS Cerberus on 5 Sep 1944 to undertake initial training.

On 15 Dec 1944 he was posted to HMAS Nizam an 'N' Class Destroyer. On 1 February in a position twelve miles off Cape Leeuwin and while altering course, the ship struck a freak wave and rolled very heavily, 75 to 80 degrees, to port and 10 ratings were lost overboard. This accident occurred at ten o'clock at night with the wind at nearly gale force. The ship circled for a long period but no sign of any survivor was seen. Some damage was caused and Nizam remained at Fremantle until 7 March 1945 making good defects.

On 14 Mar 1945 the Nizam joined the remainder of the N Class Destroyers in Sydney, and on 1 Apr 1945 they proceeded in company for Manus island, and then Leyte Gulf, arriving there on 13 Apr 1945. Here they joined the British Pacific Fleet. She remained operational in the Pacific until the Japanese Surrender, and on the day itself she was duty destroyer in Tokyo Bay.

However, it appears that Clyde transferred the previous day on 1 Sep 1945 to the HMAS Shropshire which was also present at the surrender. The Shropshire remained in Japanese waters until 17 Nov 1945 when she departed for Sydney. In May 1946 the Shropshire left Australia for England, carrying the Australian Contingent for the Empire Victory Celebrations. After the celebrations she returned to Australia in August 1946. On 1 Sep 1946 Clyde returned to HMAS Leeuwin to prepare for demobilisation from the Navy on 4 Oct 1946.

Post War

Clyde married Ariel Bishop in Victoria during 1946.

NEW RADAR STATION

Engineer Arrives To Select Site Early next week a site will be chosen at Guildford airport for the establishment of a radar station. Last night Mr. C. Traill-Nash, a radar engineer for the Department of Civil Aviation, arrived by air from Melbourne to spend a week at Guildford selecting a site for the radar building. Mr. Traill-Nash said that the proposed station would be the first of its kind in Western Australia. To aid the meteorological section of the Department of Civil Aviation, the radar equipment would be used in conjunction with balloons for the determination of the upper winds.

Yesterday Mr. Traill-Nash's brother, Rupert, arrived in the "Mooltan" at Fremantle after gaining a doctorate of philosophy in England.[2]
