War Service
Richard was called up for full time service on 12 Dec 1941, and on 22 Dec 1941 he was sent to No 5 Camp at Melville. Richard was admitted to the 37th Australian Camp Hospital on 26 Jan 1942, rejoining his unit on 12 Feb 1941. On 28 Feb 1942 he was detached to 19th Australian Garrison Battalion, rejoining his unit, which was now Area Signals Company, Western Command Signals on 4 Mar 1942 in order to attend a course at the Trade Training Depot at Claremont. On 4 Apr 1942 he had completed the course and returned to his signals unit where on 17 Jul 1942 he was appointed Lance Corporal
On 28 Aug 1942 he was classified as a Trade Group III Storeman. However, on 3 Jun 1943 he was detached to Western Command General Details Depot to face a Medical Board, with the result that he was judged to be unfit for further service and was transferred internally to the Discharge Depot where he was discharged on 17 Jul 1943.
Post War
During 1946 Richard married Lucy Mary Dowling.
