Walter enlisted in the 2nd AIF three times, each time with a new identity number: WX9193; WX21919; and WX14398.

Walter's first enlistment was on 30 Oct 1940 and he altered his birth date to 2 Mar 1920 at Tammin. He was discharged from the 2nd Training Battalion on 18 Feb 1941. NOK was his father, Clarence Tremlett. (It is likely that his true date of birth in 1922 became known to authorities, and was the reason for his discharge.)

The second enlistment occurred at Claremont on 18 Jun 1941, giving his correct birth date of 2 Mar 1922, but in a different town, Cunderdin. He served from 18 Jun 1941 - 17 Oct 1941. His next of kin this time was his sister Mrs Doris Whisson. Initially allocated to the 4th Training Battalion until 10 Jul 1941 when Walter was transferred to the 2/32 Battalion Reinforcments. He was admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital from 18 - 23 Aug 1941 before being discharged to the L.M.C. Home until 25 Aug 1941 when he rejoined his unit. On 11 Oct 1941 Walter was returned to the 4th Training Battalion before being transferred on 15 October to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot where he was discharged as medically unfit on 17 Oct 1941.

Walter's third enlistment was legal and took place at Claremont on 24 Aug 1942. Allocated WX21919, he declared on this occassion that he had been born in Kattaning on 2 Mar 1922. Walter then served until 23 Jul 1946 with the 17th Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot. Walter's sister was again given as his NOK.
