Pre War

War Service

On enlistment Bernard or Jim as he was known was classified B2 (no thumb on right hand, and deafness). He was called up for full time duty on 1 Jul 1941 with the 118th Australian General Hospital. However, on 13 Aug 1942 he was admitted to the Camp Hospital Melville with influenza, rejoining his unit on 21 Aug 1941. In early December he was granted 6 days leave. IN March 1942 he was again granted leave, but his time with some leave without pay (LWOP) so that he was absent from his unit from 20 March until 31 April 1942, and in June he received another 6 days LWOP, after which he was detached to Arthurs Battery until 5 Aug 1942. Soon after he returned to his unit, 4 Sep 1942, he was prompted Acting Corporal, this rank being confirmed on New Year's Day 1943.


On 14 May 1943 Jim was admitted to the 37th Australian Camp Hospital, returning to his unit on 19 May 1943. On 18 Nov 1943 Jim was again ill and admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital, rejoining his unit on 6 Dec 1943. He was admitted to the 37th Australian Camp Hospital with Boils on 25 May 1944, and at this time he faced a Medical Board which deemed him as 'B2' on deafness grounds. On 16 Nov 1944 he was transferred to the 75th Australian Camp Hospital before being sent on to the 37th Camp Hospital. On 18 Feb 1946 Jim was tranferred to the 110th Australian Base Hospital, remaining with them until 6 Mar 1947 when he was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge which took place on 26 May 1947.

At death his age is given as 60, implying that he was born in 1899, not 1902 as his Army records show.
