Pre War

Prior to emigrating to Australia, 20 years, 5 month old Bill enlisted as a Private Reg no. 173210 in 1916 in the British Army while living in Wrotham Ledge=, Kent, and he served in France from 1 Jul 1916 until 4 Jan 1917, returning to the UK from 4 Jan 1917 until 29 May 1917 when he was promoted to Driver. A month later he was discharged. In March 1920 he married Coral 'Marie' Rossalyn Edwardes (1899 - 1984) in Uxbridge, Middlesex. They had five children: Barbara Marie Edwardes Hayward (1922-1924); Beatrix Rosslyn Mierta Hayward (1924 - 2007); William Hayward (1925 - 2009); Constance Anne Hayward (1926 - 2005); and Patricia Susan Hayward (1930 - 1994).

Bill, together with his wife and Barbara, travelled third class on SS Demosthenes leaving London on 26 Apr 1924 for Albany where they arrived on 31 May 1924. The rest of the family were born in Western Australia. Barbara contracted measles and was in hospital soon after arrival in Australia until her death on 7 Jul 1924 in Busselton

Bill joined the Western Australian Government Railways at Noggerup on 15 Sep 1925 as a Repairer, transferring to Brookton on 27 Oct 1926, Busselton on 16 Apr 1928, Cookernup on 11 Aug 1930 and Pinjarra on 9 Mar 1931. On 29 Sep 1933 he was promoted to Ganger and sent to oversight the 373 Mile Norseman team. On 11 Sep 1935 he transferred to Dowerin, and then on 17 Dec 1936, at his own request, to Yarramony for six months and then on to Spencer's Brook. On 22 Jun 1942 he transferred to Northam where he remained until he transferred to Perth on 26 Aug 1946. On the move again on 23 Sep 1946, this time to Northam, and then Parkerville three months later

War Service

On 9 Jun 1942 at Northam, Bill enlisted in the Volunteer defence Corps and was allocated to the 9th (Northam) VDC Battalion. He was discharged on 25 Jul 1943 at his own request.

Post War

On 22 Jun 1942 Bill was transferred to Northam where he remained until he transferred to Perth on 26 Aug 1946. On the move again on 23 Sep 1946, this time to Northam, and then Parkerville three months later. On 28 Jan 1948 he was Acting Construction Ganger at Welshpool, before returning to Parkerville four months later. On 24 Jun 1948 he transferred to the Perth Yard where he acting in higher positions for the next two years. On 22 Aug 1950 he transferred to Merredin as Inspector Per Way meaning that he checked the line for faults, etc, remaining there until he transferred back to Perth on 3 Aug 1959. Bill retired on 30 Jun 1961, but on paid leave until 7 Nov 1961. His final pay rate was £805 p.a.
