Pre War
War Service
On 5 Mar 1941 William enlisted in the CMF on a part time basis, and it was 22 Jan 1942 before he was called up for full time duty, although he had spent time in the Melville No 4 Camp in training. On 30 May 1942 William was AWOL from 9:15am until 5:30pm for which he was Admonished and forfeited a day's pay. On 27 Sep 1942 he was posted to the 13th Field Ambulance. From 8 Oct to 24 Dec 1942 he was detached to the Hygiene Section, before on 24 Dec 1942 being transferred to the 60th Australian Camp Hospital. On 1 Jul 1943 he was granted Proficiency pay and then on 5 Nov 1943 he transferred to the 40th Australian Camp Hospital.
On 16 Feb 1944 William was detached to the 75th Australian Camp Hospital, and on 21 Mar 1944 he embarked on SS Koolinda for Broome where he remained until 28 Feb 1945 when he rejoined his unit and was posted to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for reassignment having a week earlier been reclassified medically as B1.
On 24 Mar 1945 he was dispatched to Queensland where on 1 May 1945 he was posted to the 87th Australian Camp Hospital, but not before he had a period AWOL from 6:15am on 8 April until 6:15am the next day. He was awarded 7 days Confined to Barracks and the automatic forfeiture of a day's pay. On 20 Jul 1945 he was sent back to New South Wales and the 1st Australian Base Depot - Personnel who then transferred him to Lae in New Guinea with the Lae POW Garrison Company on 8 Aug 1945. He embarked in Sydney aboard SS Bontekoe on 23 Aug 1945, and disembarked in Lae on 1 Sep 1945. On arrival he was transferred to the Lae POW Garrison Company until 5 Dec 1945. On 23 Dec 1945 William boarded the SS Lidvard in Lae for Brisbane where he arrived on 29 Dec 1945. Transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot, William was discharged on 12 Feb 1946.
