Pre War

War Service

In the training depot he was allocated to the 12th reinforcement draft for the 10th Light Horse.

In Egypt he was transferred from Serapeum to Heliopolis on 26 Feb 1916 where he joined the Regiment. Hospitalised from 4 Jul 1916 till 24 Aug 1916, with gastro-enteritis. In Mar 1917 Roy spent another four days in hospital, this time with pneumonia, and on returning to his unit, on 27 Apr 1917 he was allocated the rank of Lance Corporal at Marakeb in Palestine.

In Sep 1917 at Shellal, Egypt, Roy participated in a course on the Hotchkiss Rifle and he qualified. He was promoted Cpl on 4 Nov 1918 when the regiment reached Homs (Syria).

Hospitalised again on 21 Apr 1919, with appendicitis, his condition was described as serious until 30 Apr 1919, when his condition was described as "Improved".

Following his recovery from this bout of illness, he transferred to the Rest Camp at Port Said to await his return to Australia.
