Pre War
As a 9 year old Alfred sailed from London on 6 Sep 1925 for Fremantle aboard the P&O Ship SS Barrabool with parents Alfred James and Millie Roseanna. Their previous address was Homefield Farm, Sutton-on- Hone, Kent. Electoral Roll entries: 1936 - 1943 at 'The Wested", Karragullen, labourer.
War Service
Alfred enliste part time in the CMF on 7 Mar 1941 and was called up for full time service on 19 Jun 1941, posted to the 7th Heavy Brigade RAA. On 6 Dec 1941 Alfred had volunteered to serve overseas. On 25 Feb 1942 he was deemed to be qualified as a TG III Range Taker. From 25 Feb 1942 until 2 Apr 1942 he was admitted to the Rottnest Camp Hospital, reason unknown. From 27 July until 9 August he attended a Junior NCO's School, and on 17 Aug 1942 he was appointed a Lance Bombadier. On 14 Jul 1943 he was allotted a new Army No. WX30645.
Following a short period off leave from 28 - 30 Dec 1942 he continued with the battery until 21 Oct 1943 when he was transferred to the 2nd Australian Survey Battery RAA who immediately sent him on detachment to the 2nd Australian Mobile Meteorological Flight. He returned to his parent unit on 30 Dec 1943 having qualified as a Group I Surveyor. On 12 Mar 1944 he entrained in Northam for South Australia where on 6 Apr 1944 he was detached to the 103rd Australian Tank Attack Regiment. On 13 May 1944 he entered the Operational Area of the Northern Territory, and on 30 Dec 1944 he reverted in rank to Gunner. On 7 Jan 1945 the unit was transferred to New Suth Wales, and Alfred rejoined his parent unit the 2nd Australian Survey Battery RAA, and from late January until mid February 1945 he enjoyed home leave in Western Australia.
Returning to his unit in New South Wales, he was transferred to the Australian Reinforcement Training Battalion (Jungle Warfare) at Canungra on 12 Apr 1945 for training as a general RAA reinforcement. However, withthe conclusion of the war, on 15 Aug 1945 he was granted LWOP and a transfer to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot. They discharged Alfred on 4 Sep 1945.
