Sydney was mobilised on 22 Jul 1941, and called up for full time duty on 15 Dec 1941 when he was posted to the Western Command Provost Company and then sent to the 13th Infantry Training Battalion at Melville. Syd attended a Motor Cycle Drivers and Maintnenace Course in March/April 1942 at the Army School of Mechanisation. Syd was granted a period of Leave without Pay from 24 Aug 1942 until 5 Jan 1943.
