On enlistment Bernard ,or Jim as he was known, was classified B2 (no thumb on right hand, and deafness). He was called up for full time duty on 1 Jul 1941 with the [[118th Australian General Hospital]]. However, on 13 Aug 1942 he was admitted to the [[Camp Hospital Melville]] with influenza, rejoining his unit on 21 Aug 1941.
