War Service
Following basic training in Australia, Osborne and his reinforcement draft were shipped to Port Suez where further training was undertaken. Osborne was taken on strength of the 16th Battalion on 5 Feb 1916 at Ismailia, and then transferred to the 48th Battalion on 3 Mar 1916 at Tel-el-Kebir. He was employed as a Lewis gunner. On 2 Jun 1916, along with the rest of the 48th Battalion, he boarded the HMT Caledonia in Alexandria, and they disembarked on 9 Jun 1916 at Marseilles, and travelled north by train.
On 6 Aug 1916 the 48th Battalion was in the front lines adjacent to Poziéres when they were very heavily shelled.

He had some Australian sovereigns in his pocket and was just going to lend them to a friend Pte McLean when the shell came over. He had a dark moustache and was an elderly man." Martin A.A. Pte 3141
