Enlisted at Claremont on 20 Jul 1942 and was sent to the 35th Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Northam on 29 Jul 1942. On 28 Jan 1943 he was transferred to the 44th Australian Infantry Battalion (West Australian Rifle Regiment). In June 1943 he was granted three days compassionate leave, and on 2 Jul 1943 he was admitted to the 5th Australian Field Ambulance, until 27 Aug 1943. On 11 Feb 1944, with his unit he entrained for Queensland.
On 5 Jul 1944 Lewis transferred to the 2/23rd Australian Infantry Battalion, and on 8 Apr 1945 he embarked at Townsville aboard USS General H.W. Butner (AP-113) for Morotai, disembarking on 16 Apr 1945. On 11 Aug 1945 Lewis was admitted to the 110th Australian Casualty Clearing Station with epigastric pain.
