Enlisted in the CMF on 26 Apr 1942, he was called up for full time duty on 20 Jul 1942, and sent to the 13th Training Battalion at Northam camp. Following the completion of his training he was posted on 6 Feb 1943 to the 11th Australian Infantry Battalion (City of Perth Regiment) classified as a Driver Mechanic. On 21 Feb 1943 the unit left for South Australia, and from there the Northern Territory, arriving there on 10 Mar 1943. Soon after arrival in the Northern Territory he transferred to the 2nd AIF on 15 Apr 1943. On 1 Jul 1943 he was granted Proficiency Pay.

From 28 Oct until 12 Nov 1943 he was detached to the 12th Division Reception Camp as a driver, and from 22 Nov 1943 until 12 Dec 1943 he was detached to the 128th Brigade Workshops. James was granted home leave from Adelaide River between 27 Feb and 23 Mar 1944. On 25 Nov 1944 he embarked on the USAT Jane Addams in Darwin for Jacquinot Bay in New Guinea where he disembarked on 3 Dec 1944. Returning to Australia, James embarked on the HMT Taroona at Jacquinot Bay on 15 Apr 1945, and disembarked in Brisbane on 21 Apr 1945. On 24 May 1945 while on leave he entered the 109th Australian Convalescent Depot with dermatitis and acne problems. The result was a medical reclassification to B1 "Skin".
