On enlistment Bernard ,or Jim as he was known, was classified B2 (no thumb on right hand, and deafness). He was called up for full time duty on 1 Jul 1941 with the [[118th Australian General Hospital]]. However on 13 Aug 1942 he was admitted to the Camp Hospital Melville with influenza, rejoining his unit on 21 Aug 1941. In early December he was granted 6 days leave, and in March 1942 he was again granted leave, but his time with some leave without pay (LWOP) so that he was absent from his unit from 20 March until 31 April 1942.
