War Service

Joseph's initial enlistment was 23 Jan 1941 in the militia with the 7th Heavy Brigade RAA. H was posted to Swanbourne Gun Site. On 10 Mar 1941 he was transferred to the sub unit on Rottnest, and in October was granted 12 days leave. On 12 Nov 1941 Joseph was admitted to the Rottnest Camp Hospital before being released to his unit on 14 Nov 1941. He was trade classified as a Cook level 2. In January 1942 he enjoyed another short leave and again in March/April. He was sent to a Cooking and Catering Course in June/July before he decided to enlist in the 2nd AIF on 27 Jul 1942 while based on Rottnest Island. On 8 Sep 1942 Joseph was promoted as a Bombardier., and on 13 Nov 1942 he volunteered to serve overseas. On 20 Nov 1942 he was transferred to the Peron Battery.


On 14 Aug 1943 as a result of an Army strucural change he was transferred to the AUstralin Army Catering Corps, but remained with the unit. However, a year later on 15 Sep 1944 he was transferred to the 3rd Australian Corps Provost Company and on 28 September entrained in Perth for Brisbane. On 27 Nov 1944 he embarked in Townsville on the HMT Taroona for New Guinea, disembarking on 1 Dec 1944. However, 10 days later he was admitteed to the 2/7th Australian General Hospital with a fractured Medial Malleolus at the lower shaft of his Tibula. A later Military Investigation reported that he had sustained a fracture and dislocation of his right ankle when knocked down by a Military Vehicle on the Nadzab road near Lae. The injury was likely to cause permanent ill effects and no he was not guilty of neglect or misconduct in the accident.


On 20 Dec 1944 he was evacuated to Australia by Air Ambulance, emplaning in Lae, New Guinea, and deplaning in Townsville on 21 Dec 1944 and was then admitted to the 2/14th Australian General Hospital. They transferred him to the 112th Military Hospital (Brisbane) in Brisbane by Ambulance Train on 22 Dec 1944, and then on 28 Dec 1944 he was placed on another Ambulance Train from Brisbane to Melbourne where he was admitted to the 115th Australian General Hospital at Heidleberg on 30 Dec 1944. Condition stabilised, on 3 Mar 1945 he was transferred to the 110th Australian Base Hospital in Perth by train and was admitted on 7 Mar 1945.


On 26 Jun 1945 Joseph was evaluated by a Medical Board at the 109th Australian Convalescent Depot and classified 'B2' (Foot & leg) unfit for driving or marching. On 17 Jul 1945 he was sent to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for re-allocation. On 17 AUg 1945 he was transferred to the 26th Australian Works Company, but on 31 AUg 1945 he was returned to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot, this time to begin for discharge. On 1 Sep 1945 Joseph was discharged.
