Sent to the Melville camp for training, he was released on 14 Oct 1941. On 7 Jan 1942 he had completed training and was tansferred to the 13th Brigade. During May 1942 he was granted 5 days leave, and on 13 Jul 1942 he was enlisted into the 2nd AIF. A week later (14th February) he entrained in Perth for South Australia where he arrived on 20 Feb 1943. On 1 Mar 1943 he left Adelaide for the Northern Territory, arriving 4 days later where he rejoined his unit.
