Richard was called up for full time service on 12 Dec 1941, and on 22 Dec 1941 he was sent to No 5 Camp at Melville. On 28 Feb 1942 he was detached to 19th Australian Garrison Battalion, rejoining his unit, which was now Area Signals Company, Western Command Signals on 4 Mar 1942 in order to attend a course at the Trade Training Depot at Claremont.
