Cyril entered Blackboy Hill camp on 8 Mar 1916 and on 12 Apr 1916 he was allocated to the 19th reinforcement draft for the 16th Battalion, travelling with them to England aboard HMAT A28 Miltiades which sailed from Fremantle on 9 Aug 1916, and disembarked troops in Plymouth on 25 Sep 1916. Following a further 3 months training with the 4th Training Battalion at Codford in England, Cyril proceeded overseas to France aboard HMT Princesse Clementine from Folkestone on 21 Dec 1916.
In France he was taken on the strength of the 16th Battalion on 2 Jan 1917 as they were on the move to Mametz. From 10 May until 28 May 1917 he was in hospital with the 56th Casualty Clearing Station recovering from influenza, and on his return he participated in the attack on German positions on the Messines ridge during 8 & 9 Jun 1917. Several days later on 11 Jun 1917 he was the victim of gas shells, perhaps because of his earlier illness, and was evacuated from the battle field after treatment by the 77th Field Ambulance and the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station from 11 Jun 1917 until 5 Aug 1917 when he was released to the 1st Convalescent Depot. He rejoined the 16th Battalion on 27 Aug 1917 at Neuve Eglise where the battalion was re-equipping and training in preparation for another turn in the front lines. He was granted leave and was absent from the battalion from 23 Nov 1917 until 11 Dec 1917.
Cyril developed pleurisy on 9 Jan 1918 which required him to spend the best part of 3 months in hospital. Treated in turn by a Field Ambulance on 9 - 10 Jan 1918, then the 5th Casualty Clearing Station from 11 - 13 Jan 1918 before being sent to the 8th General Hospital in Rouen. On 25 Jan 1918 Cyril boarded HMHS Western Australia for evacuation to England where he was admitted to the 1st London General Hospital in Camberwell on 29 Jan 1918. He remained in hospital until 2 Apr 1918, when he was discharged to the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital before being sent to No.2 Command Depot at Weymouth on 12 Apr 1918.
