Herbert entered camp on 24 Jan 1916 and was posted to the 46th Depot Company. Three weeks later he was allocated to the 16th reinforcement draft for the 11th Battalion and he completed his training at Blackboy Hill with them and travelled with them to Egypt aboard HMAT A9 Shropshire, departing Fremantle on 31 Mar 1916, before disembarking on 24 Apr 1916.


In Egypt Herbert undertook further training during which time he reported sick on 16 May 1916. Admitted to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Heliopolis on 20 May 1916, he was found to be suffering with Tuberculosis. Released on 25 May 1916 to the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital which then placed him with a Convalescent Hospital to await a ship home.

On 5 Jul 1916 he was sent back to Australia from Suez for a medical discharge. Discharged by 5th Military District on 15 Apr 1917 - Tubercular disease. Herbert died on 8 Mar 1918.


Post War

"...developed lung trouble and was six months in the hospital in Cairo. Now an inmate of Menzies Hospital, Perth.[1]

Never recovered from his TB and died aged 25. Parents were Charles, (a gardener) and Hannah who lived on "Winkfield Farm" in Beenup. Herbert was buried in the Anglican section of Karrakatta Cemetery.
