On 28 Apr 1942 at Nyamup, Bob enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps, and was allocated to the 14th (Karri) VDC Battalion. However, at Manjimup on 25 Oct 1944 he was transferred to the 12th (Jarrah) VDC Battalion, which was placed in Reserve on31 Jul 1944.
