Pre War
War Service
Enlisted in the CMF on 6 Mar 1941, before being called up for full time service on 11 Nov 1941 at the Melville camp. On 16 Dec 1941 he was appointed Lance Corporal and classified as a Technical Storeman Grade TG III. On 21 Apr 1942 he was promoted Corporal, and on 8 Jan 1943 to Lance Sergeant. On 12 Feb 1943 he entrained for Adelaide and then relocated to Darwin with the 11th Battalion on 30 Feb 1943, arriving on 3 Mar 1943.
On 16 Mar 1943 Heber was promoted to Acting Sergeant, with his rank confirmed on 25 Apr 1943. On 12 Sep 1943 he was granted compassionate leave and Leave without pay in WA, rejoining his unit on 4 Nov 1943.
On 25 Nov 1944 he embarked on the USAT Jane Addams in Darwin for Jacquinot Bay in New Britain, arriving on 3 Dec 1944. He returned to Brisbane for leave on 21 Apr 1945 aboard the HMT Taroona from Jacquinot Bay for Brisbane, having departed there on 12 Apr 1945. He then returned to Jacquinot Bay on 27 Jun 1945 by plane from Townsville. Soon after, on 27 Aug 1945, he was hospitalised with tinea by the 2nd Australian Field Ambulance. He remained with the Field Ambulance for seven days before being released to his unit.
On 7 Dec 1945 he was released by the battalion for discharge in Australia, embarking in Rabaul on the HMAS Westralia (F95) on 8 Dec 1945, and disembarking in Brisbane on 13 Dec 1945. Discharged 11 Jan 1946
