War Service
Entered Blackboy Hill camp on 26 Mar 1917 and on 8 May 1917 he was allocated to the 26th reinforcement draft for the 11th Battalion, travelling with them to England.
After arriving in Plymouth James was sent to the 3rd Training Battalion at Durrington to prepare for France, transferring to the 2nd Training Battalion on 7 Nov 1917 at Sutton Veny. . On 10 Mar 1918, without having left England for France, James was sent back to Australia for health reasons - senility and chronic bronchitis. A Medical Board at Lark Hill, England on 4 Sep 1917 declared him to be fit for home service only, confirmed on 1 Dec 1917 and again on 20 Jan 1918. Moved to the 2nd Command Depot at Weymouth to await a ship home.
From 4 to 7 May 1918 he received treatment in the 8th Australian General Hospital in Fremantle before being discharged by 5th Military District on 21 May 1918.
