War Service
Entered Blackboy Hill camp and was allocated to the 18th reinforcement draft for the 28th Battalion and travelled with them to England as a temporary Corporal.
On arrival in England Albert was sent to the 7th Training Battalion at Rollestone where a fortnight later he was admitted to the Fargo Military Hospital with synovitis. Released on 17 Apr 1917 he continued his training be embarking for France at Southampton on 14 Jun 1917.
Take on strength by the 28th Battalion on 3 Jul 1917 at Bapaume where it was undergoing thorough retraining and reorganisation. Albert spent from 9 Sep 1917 until 28 Oct 1917 away from the battalion due to ill health (cause not stated). Seen originally by the 7th Australian Field Ambulance, who sent him on to the 56th General Hospital in Étaples, who in turn sent him to the 59th General Hospital in Saint Omer before he was released to the 7th Convalescent in Boulogne.
Admitted to the 6th Australian Field Ambulance on 22 Jan 1918, this time with influenza, later reclassified as Trench Fever (slight), leading to him being placed on an Ambulance Train for the 55th General Hospital which he reached on 29 Jan 1918. On 4 Feb 1918 he was placed aboard HMHS Cambria for England where he was admitted to the Military Hospital in Eastbourne. Recovered, he was granted furlough from 12 - 26 Mar 1918.
However, before he could rejoin his unit, he was again hospitalised with synovitis (17 Mar 1918), and it was 28 Jun 1918 before he joined the No. 3 Command Depot in Hurdcott. Albert did not return to France from this time on, spending the rest of his time overseas between command depots in England.
Discharged by 5th Military District on 20 Jun 1919.
