Laid down in 1919 as SS Lake Strymon, she was delivered to the United States Shipping Board in April 1920 after which she was sold to Southern Steamship Co. In 1923 her name was changed to SS City of Houston and on 1 Jun 1942 she was acquired by the War Shipping Administration. On 4 Jan 1946 she was returned to her previous owners at Shanghai, China who on-sold her the same day to the Republic of China, who renamed her SS Hai Wai
Rebuilt in 1947 her tonnage increased from 2,609 tons to 2,647 tons. During 1954 she was broken up for scrap on Taiwan.
