Brief History

4th Military District Recruit & Reinforcement Reception Depot was formed at Wayville in late 1939 as a result of the formation of the 2nd AIF. It was closely aligned with the No 3 Infantry Training Battalion. Also at Wayville was the 4th Military District Reception Camp, and the roles of these units overlapped until their purposes were rationalized later. In June 1942 the result was renamed South Australian Line of Communication Area General Duties Depot haning thre recruits and transiting personnel.

In September 1942 when the General Duties Depot function was hived off into three separate units to handle new recruit processing; troops in transit for leave; and troops in transit to hospitals, courses or to new postings. In June 1944 they were all joined again in one unit named South Australian Line of Communication Area Recruit reception & General Duties Depot, which operated until the end of the war and beyond handing the discharge of South Australian personnel.
