Brief History

This unit was formed at Dimra in Palestine during January 1942 to assist with the return of the 1st Australian Corps to Australia. The unit itself left for Australia in February, arriving in Adelaide in March where they set up a transit camp on Adelaide Oval the following month. After clearing the 'Stepsister Units' (those that had returned on a convoy known as the 'Stepsister' convoy), they moved with HQ AIF Base Area to Balcombe in Victoria in July. When the 6th Australian Infantry Division arrived home from Ceylon, they were renamed 2nd Australian Personnel Staging Camp and they moved to Seymour in August to handle the arrival of the 6th Division units, and the subsequent movement of those units to operational areas after their men had returned from leave. This unit was disbanded by the end of 1942, but another unit bearing the same name was formed at Wallgrove, NSW in 1944.
