Early Life
Joseph Lionel Lockyer was born on 30 January 1869 at Northam W.A. His father was Joseph Lockyer and his mother was Lydia Lockyer (nee Simmons).
Marriage
Joseph married Christian (Chrissie) Lockyer (nee Ferguson) at Kelmscott in 1900. They had two children Leslie Lionel born 1901 at Northam and Christian Winifred (Winnie) born 1905 at Kelmscott.
Property
Joseph Lionel Lockyer (who always referred to himself as Lionel) purchased over 3,000 acres of land in Roleystone in the 1880s. The land was originally part of the estate of Thomas Buckingham Senior. The 1920 rates books states that J.L. Lockyer had two properties in Armadale: Canning location Pt. 88 (78 acres), and Caning location 273 (8acres). According to the rates book, in 1931 and 1940, the Lockyer family lived at Lot 44 Albany Highway, on a property called "Linlithgow". This property was demolished in May 2019.
Community Life
Lockyer was very involved in community activities, serving on the Kelmscott Road Board and taking on the role of Secretary and Treasurer of the Kelmscott Farmers and Fruit Growers Association. In 1897 he was the Secretary and Treasurer of Kelmscott Agricultural Society; 1898 Secretary of Kelmscott Agricultural Society; 1901,1906-1908 President of Kelmscott Agricultural Society. Inaugurated as a "Life Member" of this organisation in 1927.
