Brief History
Formed in June 1943 as the HQ Moresby Base Area with the role of operating the huge base at Port Moresby which was supplying the advance on the northern New Guinea coast. On inception it was also responsible for supplying the Sub Areas at Buna, Milne Bay and Bulldog. In July its role was reduced with the loss of responsibility for the outposts and thus in September it became HQ Moresby Base Sub Area during another re-organisation prior to the capture of Lae. In October 1944 the unit was renamed HQ Area Command, Moresby, but this only lasted until December 1944 when it became known as HQ 6th Base Sub Area, remaining so until the end of the war.
