Pre War
During 1934 Fred had married Irene Elizabeth Weeks (1907 - 1986). Irene died on 31 Jan 1986 in North Perth, aged 79.

War Service
On 22 Mar 1942 Frederick enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps and was allocated to the 2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion's 'D' Company based at Armadale. Promoted Sergeant on 1 Jul 1942, he attended a weapons Course from 14 - 28 Mar 1943. On 11 Oct 1943 he was given a "Change in Allotment of Army Duty - to be Acting Platoon Commander". Fred was, along with the rest of his unit placed on the Reserve on 1 May 1945.
