Pre War

In 1941 Ernest married Joyce Lorraine Eacott in the Murray district.

War Service

On 1 Aug 1940, Ernest enlisted in the CMF's 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment ww2 at Victoria Park. He was in camp from 28 Jan - 27 Apr 1941 at Bunbury, and again from 7 Jul - 4 Oct 1941. Ernest was called up for full time duty on 19 Dec 1941 with Japan's entry into the war. On 16 Feb 1942 he was sent on a course for Farriers, held at Guildford, returning to his unit on 2 Mar 1942, with his trade grouping now being Farrier TG III. On 16 Mar 1944 he was charged with having been AWOL from 14-16 Mar 1944 earning 3 days confined to Barracks and forfeiture of 2 days pay.


He was admitted to the 75th Australian Camp Hospital on 12 Apr 1944, returning to his unit on 21 Apr 1944. On 12 May 1944 he was entrained for the eastern states having been posted to the 1st Australian Base Depot - Personnel who he joined on 25 May 1944. On 6 Jun 1944 he was sent to the 16th Australian Infantry Training Battalion, before being transferred to the 23rd Australian Infantry Training Battalion on 29 Jul 1944. He was then transferred to the 1st RAE Training Battalion on 29 Aug 1944. However, on 30 Oct 1944 he was transferred back to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge on 1 Nov 1944.
