Left school in 1941 at the end of 6th grade.
War Service
Don enlisted in the 2nd AIF at Karrakatta on 26 Feb 1946, and was sent on 9 Mar 1946 to the Australian Recruit Training Centre's 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, arriving there on 15 Mar 1946 for basic training. His records note that he had volunteered to serve with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) Japan. On 31 May 1946 he was transferred to the 6th Advanced Reinforcement Depot, and on 23 Jul 1946 he was sent to the 3rd Military District for allocation to a unit.
Warned for overseas service he would have had a brief period of leave at home before embarking on HMAS Kanimbla in Sydney on 19 Nov 1946 for Kure in Japan where he disembarked on 2 Dec 1946. On arrival he was posted to the 67th Australian Infantry Battalion (current day 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment).
On 7 Feb 1947 Don was admitted to the 20th Field Ambulance with arthritis - knee, and on 17 Feb 1947 he was transfered tothe care of the 130th Australian General Hospital]] for further treatment where on 22 Mar 1947 he was assessed as not suitable for strenuous exertion or infantry training. He was released to the 116th Australian Convalescent Depot on 22 Apr 1947, before returning to the 67th Australian Infantry Battalion on 22 Apr 1947. From 10 - 17 Jun 1947 he was again placed in the care of the 20th Field Ambulance, and soon after his return to the battalion his enlistment changed from the 2nd AIF to the "Interim Army". On 25 Jun 1947 Don was transferred to the HQ British Commonwealth Base.
On 10 Oct 1947 Don was charged with "Conduct to te prejudice of good order and military discipline, resulting in an admonition from te Base Commander. On 27 Feb 1948 he was placed on the Unallotted List (Aust), before boarding HMAS Westralia in Kure on 27 Feb 1948 for Sydney where he disembarked on 13 Mar 1948. On 19 Mar 1948 Don was back in Western Australia. While waiting for his discharge, on 31 Mar 1948 his medical status was changed to 50% disability - Rheumatic Heart Disease. He was discharged on 2 Apr 1948.
