Brief History

The 9th Field Artillery Brigade had been formed in Egypt in early 1916 to support the newly raised 3rd Division. Its constituent elements were:

  • 33rd Field Artillery Battery
  • 34th Field Artillery Battery
  • 35th Field Artillery Battery
  • 118th Field Artillery (Howitzer) Battery
  • Norman Alfred Constantine 31 Aug 1916 - 25 Jun 1917
  • 9th Brigade Ammunition Column

The 3rd Division undertook training in the United Kingdom in mid to late 1916, before deploying to the Western Front in December 1916; as a result, it missed the fighting on the Somme. Shortly after the division's arrival, the 9th Field Artillery Brigade was disbanded in mid-January 1917 when the decision was made to consolidate the number of guns within each battery and reduce the number of artillery brigades in each division to two. Nine men died while posted to this unit, none from enemy action.
