Brief History

The changing structure of Australian units from he Middle Eastern theatre to jungle operations in the Pacific theatre included the removal of carrier platoons from battalions to a carrier company at division level. The 9th Australian Infantry Division Carrier Company' was formed at Kairi in north Queensland in May 1943. In August they moved to Buna in in New Guinea to prepare for the landing at Lae, which they moved to in October, where their early role was the defence of the airfields at Nadzab while a detachment went to the Tami islands to give early warning of Japanese aircraft heading to Finschhafen. In February 1944 they were in Finschhafen providing mobile defence around the base area when they were relieved, moving o Ravenshoe in north Queensland. With the removal of Carrier Companies from the Order of Battle in July 1944, the unit was disbanded at Ravenshoe.
