Brief History

Formed in mid - 1940 as the 4th Military District Detention Barracks, it was an annex to the civilian gaol at Gladstone in South Australia. he unit was disbanded after the 2/2nd Detention barracks returned from the Middle East in March 1942. The unit was re-raised in August 1942 and reopened the Adelaide Gaol facility in October. The unit's designation was altered to 9th Australian Detention Barracks in January 1943 and from October 1943 onwards became the primary detention facility in South Australia for the rest of the war.
